BEING
Being is a video installation exploring the language of inter-human
communication, attempting to capture an essence of Japan-ness
and English-ness.
Common to both the Japanese and English, the practice of tea
drinking is a familiar ritual. Taking this as a starting point,
the video installation Being explores the conversations and
relationships that exist in the social situation of meeting
and sharing food and drink. In trying to understand situations
that provoke and instigate communication, Caroline Wright
uses the framework of tea drinking to explore behaviour and
communication within families, friends. Work colleagues and
acquaintances. Generically, the work is both a social commentary
and an examination of cultural difference. In detail it shows
the interaction of being through routine, ritual and relationships,
illustrating gesture, communication and difference.
The work is composed of several short sections, screened simultaneously.
The irregular and varied nature of edits within each part
combines to create a multi sensory experience. |
| BIOGRAPHY |
|
Caroline Wright's practice is issue based and she works in a multi disciplinary way, using time-based media, live art and experimental photography. In the course of exploring human communication and language, Caroline's work addresses the interior and exterior body, thresholds, language and identity. Her work is often site specific, engaging people as participants and she has considerable experience of dealing both with the practical considerations of placing art in the public arena and of issues around community intervention. She frequently combines project management skills with her work as an artist and delivers professional development workshops, mentoring and advisory sessions within East Anglia. She is currently working in collaboration to co-curate a touring show based on the hand as signifier. |
