Painting Title: Letters from Yorkshire
Dimensions: 6ftx6ftx 2ins deep
Medium: Oil on Canvas

My recent work is exploring issues of memory and place. They stem from an autobiographical reference point in which I use "found images" from films and textiles and text to fabricate moments of my past. The location of these paintings is a re-imagined past. The paintings seek to explore the fragmentary nature of memories and the struggle to grasp them. The play between personal memory and cultural memory is a tension in my work which I access through identification with various films and film stars. The film I have referenced in this work is the 1939 film Wuthering Heights and the text comes from Charlotte Bronte's letters.

The textile pattern is used as a decorative painted ground. The ground is covered with a white paint. I then transcribe the film imagery into the white paint in order to create a decorative surface evocative of crochet, lace making or whitework, a reminder of the handcrafted work of women. The spatial ambiguity of the paintings' surface creates a visual and physical metaphor for how memory cannot be wholly grasped or reconstituted, that it merely oscillates between past and present, the seen and unseen, the known and the supposed.
