STATEMENT

'trans' is a series of photographs made in response to a project located in the grounds of Wollaton Park in Nottingham, England. Having made work relating to insects for a number of years I was interested in Wollaton Park as it houses a well-known Natural History museum and, more particularly, a renowned insect collection. A herd of deer also roam the park, and these photographs were taken in the grain store found in the park grounds. My intention in making these was to highlight the 'brokenness' of dead insects trapped in large, dense cobwebs, in contrast to the pristine and immaculate presentation of the insects within Wollaton Hall's collection. Attempting to locate these works in the context of a 'vanitas' tradition of still life, these crushed and broken specimens betray a history of how the insects lived and died, of lost lives found within their natural habitat.
